During Margashirsha Laxmi Pooja, devotees observe a fast throughout the day as a mark of reverence to the goddess Lakshmi. Alongside Goddess Lakshmi, people also revere Goddess Bhumi Devi. When Goddess Lakshmi joins forces with Goddess Parvati and Goddess Saraswati, they collectively form Tridevi.
The name “Lakshmi” originates from the Sanskrit word “Lakshya,” meaning goal or aim. Thus, Goddess Lakshmi represents the understanding and realization of one’s purpose or goals. She is wedded to Lord Vishnu and is believed to have emerged from the Samudra Manthan (churning of the primordial ocean).
Significance of Margashirsha Laxmi Pooja
The full moon day, also known as the “Day of Divinity,” holds great significance during Margashirsha Laxmi Pooja. According to the Vedas, every element of the universe exerts complete control over the moon during a full moon. This month is considered the holiest and most hopeful time of the year as Lord Vishnu was revered as “Narayana” and the moon was cleansed with celestial nectar. Hence, this month is known as “Maasonam Margashirshoham.”
According to traditional beliefs, taking an early morning bath in the Ganga, observing a fast, and performing acts of charity are highly recommended on this day. It is also considered auspicious to worship and listen to the Katha (narrative) of Lord Satyanarayan. In addition to being associated with wealth and prosperity, Goddess Lakshmi represents success and beauty. Along with Saraswati and Parvati, she forms Tridevi (the Trinity).
The Sanskrit word “Lakshya,” which means goal or aim, is associated with the name Lakshmi. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi represents comprehension and knowledge of one’s purpose or goal. She is considered the epitome of grace, beauty, and abundance. By performing the Margashirsha Laxmi pooja with respect and devotion, devotees seek the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity, health, and riches. This puja is believed to relieve individuals from hurdles, obstacles, struggles, and materialistic concerns.
